#177: Jasper’s take

Howdy,

So, funny, my post last night was a pegged prediction twofold.

It was true, and it was confirmed (and I was able to prove it, which was quite fun, I must admit.)

The ending were I wrote (as If I were Jasper): “I believe I’d also be saying that I’m excited for school in the morning — and that’s why I’m not falling asleep yet …” was perfect.

Perfect for the moment that was to happen.

#176: If I were Jasper …

Howdy,

Well, I suppose if I were Jasper William I’d be writing tonight about how it’s the end of a spring break well spent, a break for Easter that was sacred and fun too. A celebration.

I believe I’d be saying that I enjoyed my time off from school and with family, with a little bit later bedtimes and a lot later mornings, with a looser schedule and more time with younger brothers, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents — not to mention the multitudes of egg hunts and important advent eggs.

#175: Breaking back in

Howdy,

Well, we’re feeling better today, which is a HUGE blessing.

But it’s still a chore breaking back into normal life … its rhythm and its work.

#174: Expelling

Howdy,

Sometimes when I’m writing I feel like I’m just vomiting words on the screen. Sometimes.

Nevertheless, it sure beats filling up a wastebasket.

#173: Time, to write

Howdy,

Time is a complex thing.

So simple. Tick, tick, tick.

So dimensional and eternal. Calm, quiet, roaring upheaval.

“Time’s present to us is its gift.”

I was thinking about time today, because it was time to write, and when it’s tempting to drag feet rather than plop butt and get to work with the actual writing portion of the writing, it can be a cliche like “there’s no time like the present …” that starts the start.

Just get going. So now’s the time. Now, is as good of time as any. And actually, as we all know but don’t always act on, now is the only time. The only time we have for acting is now. In the now.

There’s a lot more to this life than now, in the sense of eternity, in the sense of delayed gratification, in the sense of maturity and wisdom, but for acting, for getting to what you know you need to be doing but are dragging your feet, stalling, procrastinating, there’s no time like now, no time like the present.

Seat. Glue. Butt. That’s what they say the key to writing is: butt glue. Mix in starting in the present and I think you’ve got it.

This isn’t a new idea, but I may just have penned a new way to phrase: Time’s present to us is its gift.

#172: Hey

Howdy,

Hey, Giants, you have to score runs to win games.

Just so’s you know.

Madison Bumgarner 0-3. Unbelievable.

Gotta score more than the other team to win. That’s the KEY key to the game, scoring more than the other team.

Gotta score. Period.

Today the Giants lost to a lefty throwing about as hard as I would left-handed …

#171: Hawes Bros. Hamburger Stand

Howdy,

Today the Hawes brothers found a (somewhat) new way to use the time during one of Jasper’s Easter break days off school.

Jasper and Titus opened and operated what I’m calling the Hawes Bros. Hamburger Stand.

Startup

(It’s really going to be the photographs that steal the show for this post; I realize that. They’re just so darn cute, those two, in their little In-N-Out hats, working hard and ready for business.)

They had a Closed and Open sign, starting with closed while they worked out their business model and prepped the product, a handcrafted cash register with a drawn keypad, and ended up with a menu of hamburger, no-bake cookie, toast, and juice for their (indoor) “hamburger” stand.

I was the Hawes boys’ only patron today, but they served me with excitement — and really eyed the coins going into the cash register.

#170: Appetite is funny

Howdy,

Appetite is funny, and “hunger” makes kids who don’t always eat well, do and say funny things.

Our oldest, Jasper, eats like a bird as the saying goes, and by looking at him one might wonder at times if he’s got the hollow and light bones of a bird to go with it.

But the boy can go without eating in a way that I myself, unfortunately, can not imagine.

But every once in a while Jasper gets hungry like the rest of us. Sure, he gets hunger more often, but that hunger turns into less energy for doing routine things without it being more of a struggle than it should. It’s once in a while that he gets hungry, and eats.

Wants to eat.

Enjoys eating.

#168: A good day

Howdy,

We enjoyed a good day in Mariposa today.

Went up Friday afternoon to hang out with Epa and Grandma, and to sneak in an early Easter Egg Hunt.

A bonus was that Uncle Nick and cousins (yeah, the Crazy ones — the pairing of Crazy Cousins, of which it takes our boys to complete …) Lizzy and Ben were able to come up the hill and join for the day at my parents. (Sorry to those who were sick and had to miss this time. Enjoy the pictures and videos, and get well soon.)

Our boys were pumped to be visiting grandparents and pumped to have visitors!

Beautiful spring weather and a perfect setting for an egg hunt in the wilds of the ‘Posa wilderness landscape, sculpted by the mower and its rider, Epa (and Ryan and Jake this time, I hear. Good job, guys!)
